Yesterday Pierre (aka LaFrance) approached me about making a possible change to the Joomla admin feed module to display the Joomla security feed which highlights vulnerable Joomla extensions. To be honest although we released our own Joomla admin theme which changes the whole Joomla admin experience, I rarely dig into the other functionality available in the admin and I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it is to use the core feed module as it is.

The following is a little tweak to the Joomla admin configuration for anyone who wants to keep abreast of official security reports from the Joomla team in regards to 3rd party extension vulnerabilities.

You can read the official Joomla announcement for this new feature here.

Music to design to Vol.5

In general I tend to write code a lot more than I design for the web. Depending on the task at hand I can find my playlists change and maybe even go away entirely. The music I like to design to is the music that makes me dream, good and bad. It is music that travels and taps into emotion. Sigur Ros, Aphex Twin, Xiu Xiu and Cinematic Orchestra would feature well on that list.

[Its also built on wordpress and using it in the last few days has really helped me to see the power and simplicity of the platform. I think that using different cms/blogging platforms can really help to change your workflow as well as open your mind to different ways of thinking, which can only be good in terms of creativity from a writing and a design point of view.

The Feisty Empire? We met him in Feb 2009 and when he also gave us ten tips for writing on the web. Paul talked then about the decline of his writing specialty – recruitment advertisements (job ads). Little did he know the worst recession for 80 years was set to "torpedo his primary income stream".

Fortunately, Paul had long been crafting another string to his bow: blogging. That string is now starting to twang.

Here’s what Paul says about a new service.

As the seminal book Groundswell predicted, the popularity of blogging has exploded. Soon there’ll be two types of organisation:

  1. Those who get carted from pillar to post by a horde of angry / unreasonable /
ill-informed Web 2.0 (social media) commentators.
  2. Those who, while they can’t control online discussions about them and their products, participate for best results.

2009 Highlights from the JB Crew

In the tradition of end of year wrap ups I asked the JB team to put together some of the highlights for their work and personal life in 2009. While I asked everyone to contribute Jeremy, Barabara and myself were the only ones to actually put some fingers to keyboard; Jason was too busy snorkelling in crystal blue waters off the Australian east coast, Seth was too busy having an extended christmas/birthday, Ed was still eating christmas turkey and Rikard got lost in the Norwegian snow :)
