Creating Hyperlinks in Joomla

This is a basic tutorial for new Joomla users. It shows you how to create hyperlinks to other articles in joomla and external sites using the JCE wysiwyg editor. We recommend that you use this editor with the advanced link plugin ... it makes life alot easier when finding links to content items.

  1. Open the content item you want to create the hyperlink in.
  2. Select the text you want to use to launch the link. You do this by clicking and holding down the mouse and moving backwards or forwards over the work or phrase that you want to be the link.
  3. Now find the icon that looks like a lock - in JCE it is the second last icon on the second row of icons above the text area.
  4. Click on this icon.
  5. A popup window will appear and the parameters for the hyperlink will appear. (if the page loads but there is no information in the box then you need to make sure that www is not in the address bar of the browser ie your site url should look like this http://sitename.com/administrator ...
  6. When the popup loads you can see that there are a number of different options for you to choose from.
  7. The top half of the popups contain your traditional link options, while the bottom half displays the options for linking within Joomla.
  8. For this example we are going to create a link to an external site that will appear in a new window.
  9. In the url text window type the website that you want to link to in the following format: http:///www.mysite.com/ . It is often easier to simply copy and paste the url from the site that you want to link to by visiting the specific page.
  10. Choose your target. For this example we are going to open in a new indow so you need to click on the drop down window next to the target label and click on the 'open in new window' option.
  11. Write the title of your link in the text area next to the title label. This could simply be the name of the site you are linking to or it could be more descriptive such as: "A good example of how to create hyperlinks".
  12. Click insert at the bottom left of the pop up window and the piece of text that you had previously highlighted should now appear underlined or in the style that your template uses.
  13. Click apply or save and the article should now display the hyperlink ready to be clicked and opened on the front end of your site.
