You need to have the menu link open and then chose the zen menu tab and in the icon type search to bring up the search icon options

Is it possible to remove the word ‘search’ and just have the icon?

Also is it possible for the search input to remain on the page and not open a new page?

Are you referring to a module title. menu link as above or something in the module itself?

Do you mean the search results appear directly below the search input box?

If so you would need to use a custom search extension

This extension does something along these lines
