There are some instances where I would like to add columns inside the main content area using css.

Do you have a style guide somewhere that shows the existing class names to use for columns?

You can do this using the shortcode syntax

an example would be

{zen-row}
{zen-6}This is a block of content that will take up 1/2 (or 6 columns) of the width of the page.{/zen-6}
{zen-6}This is a block of content that will take up 5/12 (or 5 columns) of the width of the page.{/zen-6}
{/zen-row}

the rows need to add up to 12 and have open and closing syntax for the column numbers and the open / close for zen-row
