Is it possible for the link when clicking a Zentools Grid item to go to an external url? You could do that with Zentools 1 and I liked that feature.

If I use Alternate Links as the preferred option, how do I get it to open in a new window?

I'd be careful with opening in a new window - it's frowned upon usability wise unless it's opening a new document type or has a new site type icon

but to answer your question check the items you have added to the drag and drop section and in link type you should see "new window"

I'm only using open in new window because it is going to a totally separate website. I assume that's not frowned upon?

Thanks anyway I have it working now.

I think good practice would be to either say it opens in a new window or have an icon marking the link as different
