I like the Zentools 2, but wondered if there's a way to get a overlay on the items for the layout like the caption layout - or simply some kind of layout.

The option to have an overlay or animated overlay is there, but I can't figure out how to get that working. Where is the source of the overlay? Is it a Joomla article caption? Is it the source name of the image used.

Is this even possible with the filter layout?

That's correct. Even without that feature the linking isn't working. Images aren't linking back to the content article, just back to home again. But that's another issue. Primarily it's trying to get the overlays to work first.

I have forgotten about that issue - it's been a while. What's with that? What causes it and is there a fix for it in Joomla rather than a workaround?

Its how a lot of cms work so you would need to add a link - if you aren't bothered about assigning different modules to individual pages then a category link is fine
