which version will show the titles lower in opaque strip and the thumbnails below images?

Its the overlay themed slideshow but it will require extension css customisation for it to display as you require

The design of the template was for the slideshow to use a standard layout with selected options enabled

"The slideshow is an instance of the Zentools module published to the banner position. It uses the slideshow standard layout. If you use other slideshow layouts in this position you may receive varying results." (from the documentation)

The thumbnails are not visible when option is enabled.

the template is really only intended to display using the standard slideshow layout

To get that to show you would need to customise the css so they display
