Cannot make a copy of Onepage template

zentoolsIf you use Zentools please post a review at the Joomla! Extensions Directory.

Hi,

This will be my first website and I'm brand new to Joomla - I really love the clean designs you have so I thought I would start off with a simple project using the Onepage template.

I'm trying to make a duplicate copy of the template so that I can mess around with one but always have a fresh copy to revert back to if needs be. I used the quickstart package and have updated the T3 plugin to the latest version. If I go through the Joomla backend and click the copy template button I get the message that the new template was installed successfully but also a warning message like :

JInstaller: :Install: File does not exist /home/...........co.uk/tmp/template_copy_545e310623305/languages/en-GB.tpl_fresh_clean_original.ini (each of the fresh, clean, original words being names I've added to the template name each time I tried to copy it!).

When I look back at the template list the copy is not there, nor can I see anything if I look at the files via Filezilla. However, I made a copy of Protostar to see if that worked and everything was fine with this one.

Is there anything I can do so this nice, easy copy template button will work for onepage?! Or do I just accept it's not going to work and make a copy of the template and upload using Filezilla (I know I need to change some file names if I do that as well).

I've had a good look through the forum and searching around but can't find any info on this same problem. Thanks ever so much for your help in advance if anyone has an idea!

Hi Carrie,

The screen you are trying to duplicate on - is it the template manager screen?

its named "Template Manager: Styles"

Are you working with a Joomla 3 quickstart file?

In this screen you can duplicate template styles but you will need to make the new template style the default version running on the site

Hi Paul,

I go to the Template Manager screen then click on the templates tab on the left hand side. I then click on the Onepage template so I get to the customise page and on here I then click copy. I thought that I needed to do it this way so that I don't mess up any of the main template files when I'm playing about with it.

Yes, it's the Joomla 3 quickstart file I downloaded from here for the Onepage template.

Thanks very much,

Carrie

I think I'd start off with duplicating the template style I'll just attach a pic

duplicate2.jpg

to get to this screen its extensions tab > template manager

Try duplicating here and then clicking the star on this same screen next to your duplicate template style / version

Thanks for the info Paul - the template style copied all fine. I'm just concerned I might inadvertently overwrite something in the main template file and then not have an original, clean copy I can revert back to. I know I have a lot to learn so your advice would be welcome when you get time!

Thanks again, Carrie

If you copy the template style and then work with the copy you are find

This is a handy guide for Joomla
www.siteground.com/tutorials/joomla-video/build-joomla3-site/

But as you are using onepage I'm assuming as a one page template so most won't apply in this case

I would suggest installing Akeeba backup core

The main thing to remember with a one page template is its module driven

The menu text is triggered by a module being published to one of the modules on the mext text row

I would also suggest updating the template before you do anything - so download the standard template from the template download page and install it via the standard joomla installer

DON'T uninstall the existing version

The standard template is the non quickstart template file

Prior to doing big updates use akeeba - its the first extension I install on any site

Morning Paul,

Just to say thanks for all your advice, I really appreciate it. I shall work through all you've suggested a bit later and have a look at the guide too. I'm gradually working it out!

No problem - just to get you started

The extensions I install on every site are

akeeba backup
JCE editor
Zentools
Joomla Bamboo JB Type
Joomla Bamboo JB Maps2

If you end up using Joomla a lot I'd suggest purchasing the pro versions of Akeeba Backup and Akeeba Admintools (there is a coupon for this in the members section)

JCE editor most users find is easier to use than the normal standard Joomla editor (its also free to install)
