template updates

zentoolsIf you use Zentools please post a review at the Joomla! Extensions Directory.

Hi - I want to make sure all my template versions are up to date.

If I update them is there any risk of the website design changing or being damaged?

Thanks

Ian

Hi Ian,

It depends on how the template was used to a degree
e.g. if code was adding to the core template files this would be lost on update

What template are you wanting to update?

Also with updating templates I would 100% have a fully functioning backup in place

Recently I have made use of the akeeba pro to roll back updates to sites using non JB templates

If you are worried and I do this myself sometimes I download an akeeba file and run the site locally

In extreme circumstances I have actually tested a site on a live domain to replicate the php version (this is due to extensions being used that I am unfamiliar with)

Hi Paul - thanks for this.

I'm trying to make sure all the templates are up to date - I have lots of sites using different templates.

I don't mess with core coding - so I should be safe there.

Testing locally makes sense, of course.

However, I've come across two problems identifying the version number.

I'm running Responsive2 1.4.1 on the site, but on the JB site the latest download appears to be earlier at 1.4.0.

And I'm also using Build.r - but I can't find a version number for this on the template overview page. I see the download is 1.3.2.

I want everything totally current before testing PHP 7.x

Sorry if it's all a bit confusing...

Ah. I found the Build.r version in template manager (of course!)

Thanks

With moving to php7+

What version are you referring to exactly?

Also you will need to be sure all the extensions used on the site support php7

With versions numbers maybe have a read of this

It gets even more confusing.

I've just upgraded Responsive 1.2.7 to 1.4. The template overview still says 1.2.7, but template manager says 1.4.

Am I missing something here?

Thanks

Sorry Paul - I'm confusing myself here - it should be and is responsive 1.2.7.

What version number do you see if you via manage select the template and refresh the cache?

Perhaps you should ignore me for a while :-)

It would be the latest stable version of PHP 7 when I eventually get round to upgrading.

I have tested a few sites locally in 7 using MAMP and they seem to work OK, but I wouldn't want to trust that!

I am setting up a test server with my host and I'll migrate everything across to it for testing before anything goes live.

Thanks

Sounds a good plan testing wise especially if sites have quite a few extensions installed

Best of luck

Yes - I twigged extension manager just before your useful link arrived.

I don't use that many extensions, and most of those I do have are mostly sensible ones like Akeeba.

Plugins I'm not so sure about...

Just updating everything is a bit of a nightmare - I have everything on a spreadsheet now, so at least I can see where I'm going.

I'll keep you posted when I eventually get round to the big move!

Thanks again for your help,

Ian

Hi again Paul - I don't understand Build.r templates.

I'm currently running version 1.

When I look for upgrades I see Utafiti, Colourshift and a few more, but not Responsive which I'm using.

Not sure what I should be going for...

Any ideas?

Thanks

Ian

OK - got it now. I don't understand why all the other Build.r templates appear on the same page, and in what way they are different...

Buildr works using presets and child themes

There is the buildr core (contains the presets) and the child themes which are all the different templates you see e.g. grid4, highline2, onepage two etc
