Music to design to Vol. 3

Written by Anthony Olsen Published in Music to design to

This is the final round in the Joomla dj battle royale between myself and Kyle from Joomlapraise. Yesterday Kyle sent down a fairly rocking Indie selection and today Im going to contrast it with a very down tempo back to basics piano and soundtrack mix from the likes of Yann Tiersen, Sigur Ros and a bit of Phillip Glass. This mix is certainly not something to jump around to but is perfect for laying down some good designs if you are in a quiet mood. Enjoy!

Great tracks from Tiersen. Very sweet and touching music. I only knew his music for Amelie, not this album.
I do prefer original version of Mad World by Tears For Fears.

I must note that your musical tastes are 100% reflected in your themes, Anthony. :-)

Well, we'll see what JP puts on their final list but I'm definitely getting what you're putting down. I'm guessing you design/author/code like I do. Instrumental music is perfect especially when it's slightly majestic and sonically interesting. I mean, I like rocking out as much as the next dude, and sometimes you have to slam on some Pixies or Skeleton Key or 50 Foot Wave to get you pumped up for some work. But when I'm designing or developing, lyrics and the conventions of popular rock music can be distracting; as in, I'm holding a lot of crap in my short term memory and if I start singing along (even in my head) I can loose track of where I am. (More or less; you get the idea.) But good electronic/instrumental music creates a soundtrack that makes staring at computer exciting but doesn't interrupt the conversation a designer needs to maintain when really trying to get shit done.

Some that are perfect for me: M83 'Before the Dawn Heals Us' & 'Dead Cities...', Boards of Canada 'Campfire Headphase' & 'Music Has the Right...', Michael Nyman' Piano concerto.

@puffermedia - yep you really hit the nail on the head there. There is some lyric based music I can design to - see the first post - but in general I prefer the instrumental stuff. The sonic expansive world of soundtrack and ambient really helps to open the mind to design possibilities.

@Sulley thanks for spotting that. Its been interesting putting together this music in relation to that. Ive certainly always been attracted to sparse minimal type music and I think that really transferred across into the visual for me when I started designing.

@Rikard I have Norwegian blood and I think I must automatically be drawn to the cold northern and Nordic soundscapes.

Thanks for posting the comments on the blog and because its Christmas day I feeling super generous and Im going to give Sully and puffermedia the 12 month subscription. @Rikard - you already have an upgrade :)
So guys if you get in touch with me via email and let me know preferred logins Ill set you up.

Big thanks to @joomlapraise for helping put a bit of fun into what is normally a hectic and mildly stressful leadup to the Christmas.
