we use the buildr template, unfortunately the styles won't save.

For example, when I change the general settings in the template,
.. the backgroundcolor, or the general color in the presets,
nothing changes in the frontend.

There are always the colors from the "theme.template.css"

Changes like Effects, Fonts, Social, etc. work.

in template styles, on the design tab, in the right column under general > styles > presets, there is a blue 'save theme' button. try using that first.

make sure no site cache is enabled, either in joomla config or on the server (siteground, by default, turns on caching).

there is likely a script conflict on the backend. if you are comfortable with managing scripts, you can add a jquery manager such as jqueryeasy or eorosis, and use that to get some control of scripts (such as jquery ui in the back end). i've done that more than once...the conflict often being with a regular labs plugin i like.

other than that, i recommend a ticket so the jb propellerheads can xray your installation to find the problem. (this is how i discovered the regular labs conflict *i* was having.j
