I would like to limit the footerwrap to 980px and have it in the center.

As usual, I apply width and margin: auto. Then I want to remove the float.

With Medica setting float to none the footer moves to the top of the template.

How can I do what I plan to do?

If you set the row style to
inherit for the footer row style in the settings > theme tab

and

then target

#footerwrap .zen-spotlight {}

with a background - does that work for you?
