My client wants to have a graphic instead of the Prev and Next buttons.

How can I accomplish this?

Hi Jeff,
You can add shortcodes like this:
zentools2.joomlabamboo.com/zentools-layout-styles/carousel

But at this stage I think the module would strip out the img tag.

That ended up working because then I just put this in my custom.css

.fa-angle-left:before {content: url(/images/global/Scroll-prev.png);}
.fa-angle-right:before {content: url(/images/global/Scroll-next.png);}

Yes I think using the character breaks the module params. This will be fixed in the next version.
