500 Internal Server Error compiling less to css

I made a couple of color changes to the responsive2 blue theme and tried to compile the changes and save them. However, I was unable to do so because of an error:
HPPT/1.1 500 Internal Server Error
.... template=responsive2&tmpl=ajax&function=ajax-compiler.

How do resolve this issue?

FYI, we are using joomla 3.9.1 and the latest release of responsive2 and the menu and tools plugins.
