Extension for Joomla to make a Podcast list?

zentoolsIf you use Zentools please post a review at the Joomla! Extensions Directory.

Hello,

a new client of mine would like a page on her site that emulates this page:

www.mftwny.com/podcasts/

So I am looking for an extension for Joomla that will enable me to implement something similar whereby the viewer can click on one of a list of podcasts and that podcast will play. The files that the client gave me are mp3's.

Thank you,
Elizabeth

Hi Elizabeth,

It's not something I've used

extensions.joomla.org/extension/podcast-manager
extensions.joomla.org/extension/sermonspeaker

These two show up when I google it

Cheers

Hi Elizabeth

Take a look at Docman
www.joomlatools.com

Rock solid extension to manage files and will allow access management if you need it. Good support and easy to style/customise should you need.

Will manage audio files out of the box. We have used it for years to manange downloads on a number of sites.

Alternatively just paste the code into an article. If you only need basic access this will work in most cases. You could add one file per article and then use a list or maybe zentools to display the article list for you across the site.

Hope that gives you some workable ideas

Regards Ian

hello, thank you for your comment. I see that Docman is an extension that helps the viewer of a site download files such as recipes.. I did not see anything on their site about a list of mp3's that would play if you clicked on a title. Please explain further. Thank you. Elizabeth

Hi Elizabeth

It does play mp3 files, they are just files to download or stream in essence.

From this page - www.joomlatools.com/extensions/docman/
under "Even more Features" developer states:
Real-time streaming
DOCman comes with built-in support for video and audio streaming.

Same true for video files, and same applies to audio as such:
www.joomlatools.com/extensions/docman/documentation/tutorials/play-and-stream-video-files/
They only have this documentation for videos but thought the link may be useful for you.

On support search for "audio" throws up some replies relevant to you, here are a couple of links for you.
support.joomlatools.com/forums/topic/6371-create-a-podcast-feed?highlight=audio
support.joomlatools.com/forums/topic/6563-play-audiofiles-directly?highlight=audio

Second link relates to fileman but same true for docman.

That should direct you to some resources to better understand the possibilities. Of course you can contact the developer for first hand advice before jumping into the extension.

also joomlaworks allvideos is free - I use it extensively with a plain html5 player.
www.joomlaworks.net/extensions/free/allvideos

the jwplayer (jwplugin) is a list player that creates modules. made by the same people but designed specifically for lists. More involved, but very professional. (free, there is also a paid advanced version.)

html5 works in any browser so i imagine there are WP options like allvideos. On one of my sites, i post them to a dropbox folder, and link via shortcode { mp3remote }dropbox/url/path/to/file{ mp3remote }.

jwplayer is cross-platform and there is a WP version. styling it is a bit technical, but the results speak for themselves. It builds a playlist as a module (or widget) so different playlists would be separate widgets.

I used to use soundcloud but they started hijacking my traffic on mobile devices, so I ditched them. Which is too bad, because they were rather good - they were perfect - until they started doing that.

Possibly not with that particular player, no. You can certainly get up and running fast with allvideos. Using zencode (and a modal plugin) you can create some nice lightweight effects, and build a list in a hurry.

Here's a demo of a page on a site where I use allvideos extensively. The mp3's are on dropbox, but they can be anywhere.

thank you I will try this... but where do I get this and what is it? "zencode (and a modal plugin)" thank you for all your help.

Zencode comes with any late-model JB template and allows you to make columns and rows in shortcode. So if you wanted to have a two column layout with an allvideos html5 player:
{zenrow}
{zen-6} {mp3remote}{url/path/to/mp3}{/mp3remote}{/zen-6} {zen-6}add your content here{/zen-6 }
{/zenrow}

On large screens this is two columns, on mobile, the right column will slide under the left column.

that's all the code I would need. (I did install AllVideos and turned it on). However, my mp3 files were too large to upload to my joomla images/audio folder...so can I just put this in the path to the mp3:

www.oasiswebdevelopment.com/darci_podcasts/3-8-m-f-cut.mp3

So I just paste the following code into an article in Joomla?

{zenrow}
{zen-6} {mp3remote}{www.oasiswebdevelopment.com/darci_podcasts/3-8-m-f-cut.mp3}{/mp3remote}{/zen-6} {zen-6}Darci’s First Podcast{/zen-6 }
{/zenrow}

And do I have to correct the path in the AllVideo plugin to read www.oasiswebdevelopment.com/darci_podcasts

thanks so much sorry to be so unsaavy... Elizabeth
