Very bad page load speed

zentoolsIf you use Zentools please post a review at the Joomla! Extensions Directory.

Hi there

This is my first time using this template. Before i was using Base3.

The site worked great while working locally (MAMP).

Since backing up via Akeeba Backup, and restoring on a dev server the site takes around 40 seconds to load (if it loads at all). Various page load speed tests such as google dev are listing problems with the less files.

Has anyone else had this problem? is there a quick fix. Any help will be much appreciated! Please let me know if you need any more information.

Thanks in advance

Hi

You should have less files disabled on a live site as it will slow performance down

"This setting loads .less files on the front end of your site. This means you can preview changes to less files without compiling them using an external program such as codekit, koala, winless etc. Disable this option if site is in production or you use an external compiling application."

You need to turn off dev mode in the settings tab > CSS Settings

Hi Paul

Firstly, thanks for your reply.

The site is not live, its just on a dev server for testing. Mainly cross platform testing and lower versions of IE.

Im confused as to why this is only a problem while using the Responsive2 template and not others such as Base3

Also,

I have just compiled less to css, then turned off dev mode as you suggested. This breaks the site and is not pulling through any css?

What errors show in the console window - sounds like a permission issue

Are you able to add a link?

False alarm, a hard refresh fixed that!

Thanks very much for your help.

One quick question though, As i am still developing the site and i need to write less. What is the best way off adding my css now that i have compiled less to css etc?

A few options you could try

Thanks for the link.

As i suspected i am going to have to compile less to css after every change i make. This is a bit of a deal breaker. Going to have to go back to Base3.

Can you boost the performance of the dev server?

2. Your servers execution time isn't high enough to allow for the processing of the Less.

stackoverflow.com/questions/16171132/how-to-increase-maximum-execution-time-in-php

3. Your server memory isn't high enough to allow you to process the less.

I don't see how this could be the problem? We are using other template/ frameworks which are all less based but this is the first time we have encountered these problems.

The plot thickens too, as it seems when i compile my less to css, all less is not being included, or its not compiling some files. The site looses lots of styles once the less is compiled and it re gains them once i turn dev mode back on.

And now for some reason <section> are ignored in IE8, breaking even more css where i am targeting nested elements via the section or styling the section itself!

Really confused.

With IE8 do you need to support it?

As IE8 as far as I know does not support html5

Does sound like some permission or file issue - are you able to create a ticket?

Unfortunately yes i need to support it. IE8 supports enough.

here is the site using Reponsive2; uhnm.wwwnlsrc1.supercp.com/

here is a site using Base3; firstsolicitors.wwwnlsrc1.supercp.com

Notice IE8 recognises <section>

thats the least of my worries though. Im worried why when in compile my less into css i loose styling for things? How is possible?

Thanks for all your help.

Can you create a ticket for the less issue and I'll talk to the developer hopefully today but given the time difference with Australia it may be monday

Hi Paul

Ive opened a ticket.

Thanks very much for your time and patience. Hopefully this can get resolved.

Building the site with this template was much easier and efficient until it went onto a dev server, so it would be brilliant to resolve this. Monday would be fine if not today, i have clearly missed the deadline for today now anyway.
