Best way to create sidebar menus?

With fontawesome icons it not possible to list them all and when wanting to use the css the normal shortcode or jbtype syntax doesn't apply

so I would go to an example on the fontawesome site and view the individual icon

for example -

fortawesome.github.io/Font-Awesome/icon/plus/

and then then inspect the css for the icon in the google web developer tool bar

Thanks Paul, worked like a charm.
The Firebug (ffox) inspector doesn't display the hex code, it displays the square box I mentioned in the previous post, but the chrome inspector reveals it.
