Best way to create sidebar menus?

zentoolsIf you use Zentools please post a review at the Joomla! Extensions Directory.

Hi guys,

I need a bit of direction as I don't know where to look for this answer.

Which is the best way to create a nice looking sidebar menu with this framework/template and Zentools 2?

Is it to use Zentools2 module type as a sidebar module or to use a zenmenu type module in the sidebar?
I'd like a sidebar menu which supports open/close (accordion) and looks good.

Hi

With the menu how many levels are coming off the toggle menu item (clickable parent)?

I will have one sublevel. That is, one level under the parent

The first step for creating an accordion menu - is to have the toggle menu items as separators with the real links children of the toggle

Add the accordion class to the menu module

You also need the accordion script enabled in the template settings under the menus tab

Thanks Paul, I'll give this a whirl.
Can you point me to some documentation on this please? If I come into trouble... I'll look there before asking here :)

That should pretty much cover it

1. Create menu with separators and children of that separator
2. Create menu module with class added
3. Make sure js scripts are enabled in template

bambootheme.com/showcase/apr15/template-features/module-overview/module-classes-2 for an example on page

Paul,
Is there a way to create such an accordion "menu" but automatically built from J! content? that is, I would like to display article titles within categories, in the sidebar, accordion style.

The drawback of using a "menu" in the sidebar is that it must be updated every time a new article is posted. I'm trying to streamline this by having the sidebar menu being dynamically created/updated.

Thoughts?

I don't know of a way to do this using core joomla or any of the Joomla Bamboo extensions I'm afraid

So you would need to check out the Joomla Extension Directory to see what is available

Ok,
Thanks for the quick response. I was hoping that maybe JB would have a Zentools2 examples for such a task.
Thanks again.

hmm I'll check on this given its so new I'm not sure of all the features

But I'd think probably not given the first link of an accordion would need to act as a toggle with the all other links working as normal

Thanks Paul, I got the accordion to work.

However, compared to other accordion sidebar modules I've used from other templates, it really is not obvious that a parent option has a "dropdown" or hidden submenus. The ">" icon is way off to the right on a widescreen monitor and in my opinion, will be easily missed by visitors.

see:
newsite.theneighbourhoodclinic.com/index.php/newsletters

right side, "Services" menu. "Massage Services" is a parent menu.

Any suggestions? Quick fixes in a config panel or other simple solution?

Icon wise - can you try compiling less to css in the template

We now recommend using zentools2 for accordion content as its more flexible

I recompiled... no change.

And I'm confused. You had recommended I use the accordion in the first place? That's why I used this approach.

Although on the next release we will update the menu to resolve this glitch so you could wait for that release
