Not the background of the menu links but the row
Would like it to be semi opaque

Appears that <ul class="zen-menu-404 "> is the thing but can't find it's location.
Tried paying around with styles in the custom.css and it didn't work.

Any suggestions?

Do you mean the banner row underneath the menu?

The template has settings for an opacity effect

The existing menu link styling on your site is these lines

#menu ul > li a, #menu ul > li .zen-menu-heading { background: rgba(0,0,0,0.4);}

#menu ul > li.active > a, #menu ul > li:hover > a, #menu ul > li.active > .zen-menu-heading, #menu ul > li:hover > .zen-menu-heading {background: rgba(0,0,0,0.4);

It just does the div background just for the menu item
I want the whole menu row/div to be like that as outlined in the first image.

Not quite sure how you want this to look so I've used a horrible colour

.zen-menu-horizontal ul { background-color: rgba(215, 44, 44, 0.5); background: rgba(215, 44, 44, 0.5);}

With it being rgba the last value is the alpha channel

These values go from 0 to 1 e.g. 0.1, 0.2 etc
