Updating template and joomla version

zentoolsIf you use Zentools please post a review at the Joomla! Extensions Directory.

Hi guys,

Getting back to my site after having to take some time away.

The last time I tried to update to Joomla 3.6.5 (I'm currently on 3.6.2) it broke something and I had to have my host (Hostmonster) reset the site to a previous day. I thought this might be because my template (Focus2) needed an update but of course my subscription had run out while I was away.

Since I've returned I checked and have seen that there is a new version of Focus2. But I've gotten kind of gun shy at this point, and just wanted to see if anyone knew of reasons I shouldn't go ahead and update the new template version and then try the Joomla update again.

One other thing, my host upgraded to a new PHP and that seemed to cause problems at first, so I was also wondering if anyone knew whether that might be associated with Joomla the template, or something on their end.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Bob,

There is a security issue with the site if you don't upgrade as there are a couple of security updates in there

What php version is your host using?

Cheers

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the quick reply. My host, if I'm reading it right, is using 5.6.29 (php). When they first changed to it my site was acting pretty glitchy. Things seem to have calmed down since then, but at the time I was wondering if my lack of Joomla and template updates might have been part of the problem.

Anyway, I do intend to update both Focus2 and my Joomla version. I guess I'll do the template first and see if that allows the new Joomla version to install smoothly this time.

Unless you know of a reason I shouldn't go ahead, I'll probably get started tomorrow.

Thanks again.

Okay, this is going to be a stupid question.

Do I just upload to my site the complete new Focus2 version or is there an update somewhere (I looked but couldn't find one)? I know the site probably just adds the new bits, but as I said before I'm a little wary of breaking things at this point.

Hi Bob,

First of all have you taken a backup of the site? e.g Akeeba backup is a good backup extension

Hi Bob,

So you would download the latest template version and install it via the Joomla installer

What version of Zentools2 or Zentools1 are you using?

It says 1.13.7. It doesn't say whether it's zentools1 or 2.

Do I need to update that as well?

JB_mod_zentools_J3+_1.14.1.zip is the latest version of zentools

I call this zentools1

To be clear for my feeble mind, then,

1) update zentools
2) then update to new version of Focus2
3) then update to latest Joomla version

Am I missing anything?

Thanks, Bob

Happy to do it that way, but I just want to say again that last time I tried to update Joomla first it messed up something on my site. I'm pretty sure I was still able to get into the back end, so if I'm right that shouldn't stop me from updating the template. But my assumption then was that the problem happened because my template wasn't updated.

If you think I'm wrong about that, or that that the problem might have been something else, I'll just go ahead and do it in your suggested order.

Joomla should update as its not dependent on the template

If there is a problem it may manifest on the front end but it shouldn't be the cause of the problem

If uncertain it doesn't matter than much on the order you install - it's just more likely the problem would be the Joomla update

So perhaps try installing the new template version first

Hey Paul,

Just went through all three updates (template, Joomla, zentools) and the same thing has happened - the front end of my site is no longer available. I get this error,

0 - Error decoding JSON data: Syntax error
You may not be able to visit this page because of:

an out-of-date bookmark/favourite
a search engine that has an out-of-date listing for this site

If difficulties persist, please contact the System Administrator of this site and report the error below.

I have a few ideas about why this happens (maybe I need to update an extension?), but it makes sense to me to just ask if the problem here is obvious to you.

Thanks for your help and sorry to be a continuing thorn.

Hi Bob,

No problem - keeps me busy :)

Can you check you have the latest versions of your extensions

Both JB and other extension providers

As far as I know only the JBLibrary of JB extensions can cause this but you don't need that installed

I just checked. There are no updates pending. It looks like all my extensions are current.

Out of almost 190 extensions (I checked the Author column in the Extensions:Manage library) only 16 or 17 were Joomla Bamboo. The great majority of the rest were Joomla! Project, Joomla Works and some Akeeba stuff. There were also maybe 10-20 things that had singular names I didn't recognize.

No updates pending unfortunately doesn't mean they are up to date

Do you have JB Library installed?
