I intend to create a bi-Lingual Website (german, english). Is there a guide how to implement this best?
Is it the easiest way to double all Content, menus, modules?
From a Publishing perspective, I´d like to have 2 country flags on top of the site and depending on which icon I click, the one or the other site is displayed. How can this be done best?

You don't have to use any custom extension it can all be done using the inbuilt Joomla core options

Just a note on multi language sites, if you are using a JB template before Xero then the T3 framework was used and you need some additional steps for multi language setup that is required to a standard Joomla installation. You need to configure it in the template admin and mega menu section.

In my opinion if you can I would use one of the later templates but thought I'd bring the above to your attention.

Joomla is really good with multi language sites and associating content between languages. Depending on the user and translation team you may want to consider how you manage the translation. If it is a static site that does not change much then Joomla out of the box is great however if the site is active and translation is important then you may want to consider Josetta to manage translation in the workflow.

For small sites it is not necessary but for larger sites, especially where non techy translators are employed, we have found it really useful and does not mess with the core Joomla data.

We do use for sites that require support for real translators. We do a lot of sites that require Welsh and English, so this works well by giving the translation team access just to the words that need translating without needing to train them in Joomla. Once logged in to the frontend they are just shown the areas that still need to be translated by a real person and before that the translation can be provided automatically by Bing. We get much less support this way as the Cymraeg translators can be rather fussy and by them doing it directly we have far less back and forth in pursuit of perfection.

The developer is Yannick, who also develops sh404sef, so the support it very good and once you get to grips with extension it is rather simple in operation.

What I like over similar extensions is it does not replace either the original content or the translated content so you could remove the extension and the site would still function.

One thing which is a feature (bug) is with K2 extra fields, the translation does not work correctly and can delete the values in the db, so best avoided. If you understand a bit about how K2 works you will understand why but suffice to say be cautious with the extra fields and users if using Josetta. I did start rewriting the k2 plugin to correct it but never debugged fully, if k2v3 appears I'll get back on to it. The rest of K2 works fine.

Dear Paul,
I am now very close to my multilingual site and followed the instructions above. Now I am at the point, where I would like to integrated the accordion module. Which way do I have to go?
Is the module also able to handle multilingual pages out of the box?
Or do I also need to copy the accordion module into an english version and associate the english texts?
Menus, categories and articles are already translated.

I tried that out, but the result is ... hm, the site is damaged. Neither the accordion nor the grid can be seen after having it switched to a multilingual site. Need help!!
E.g. Where can I assign the accordion module to the german homepage?
