I'm having trouble via custom css or template manager to make the active item nav font color to change to a different value. I have a page class assigned to the page. Note in the image that the preview does not reflect the value selected in the settings (yes, I clicked the preview button and refocused the page preview before snapping this screenshot).

I'm not sure what page I should be looking at

Active item of one page, yes. I want that to be wither #FFF or #000. But it's defaulting to primary (or secondary) and changing things in template manager or custom css don;t seem to have any effect.

Try

.choirpage .navbar-default .navbar-nav > li > a:focus, .choirpage .navbar-default .navbar-nav > li > span:focus {color:#fff !important}

facepalm. in an earlier cut and paste error, I see I wiped out my own pageclass selector.
