I turned off css and js optimization and the problem *appears* to go away, but is that really an answer? Do I really want to turn those optimizations off?

I'd back up the site and then install the latest t3 plugin

This will add features to the admin that the template does not support but it should get rid of the notices / warnings

If you don't want to update you would want to try an alternate optimise extension like jchoptimise but I'd suggest the plugin update

With the t3 plugin it will probably come with the two t3 templates so I'd remove those
