What is a GIF?

When working with websites - several common image types are used
One common image type is .gif

GIF stands for Graphics Interchange Format and was first used in 1987.

GIFs are only able to display 256 colours which makes them suitable for solid colours or flat artworks only - as they lack ability to display subtle shades or tonality changes.

However the .gif format does support transparency and limited animation.
