Its the menu id problem

so need to create a menu link either for the article or its category

I think that's what you are suggesting....

Hidden menu is what I use

Don't talk to me about football - not read the papers or watched the news since that "match"

Average players and a average team - although I'm expecting them now to beat Costa Rica

Moving on rather rapidly

With the hidden menu - articles if you want to assign different modules to pages or if the modules are the same across the different pages then it would be a category link
