Modifying a Joomla 3.x template

zentoolsIf you use Zentools please post a review at the Joomla! Extensions Directory.

Hello,

We are trying to build a Joomla 3.0 site that should look like the image attached to this message.
geosciences.jpg

So we need a template that allows us to place a vertical module at the right side, (the "Gateways" section) that must span from top to bottom. However most of the JoomlaBamboo templates are designed to be collection of horizontal layers or grids. So I am not able to arrange the blocks to get this effect.

I have been working with the Grid3 template. One of the combinations I tried was -- Published the image slideshow in Grid 1, Gateways in Grid 2/ Sidebar; Geonews in Grid3 and GeoEvents in Grid4. As you can imagine, the Grids 3 & 4 only displayed at the bottom of long Gateways section and not next to it.

I was wondering if you could direct me on how to add a new block to the template. Or maybe I should consider some other template? I did take a look at all the Joomla 3.0 templates offered by you but I did not find one that had vertical blocks.

Thanks!
Radhika

Hi there,

Yes you would need to make some customisations to one of the templates to make that kind fo layout.

I am hoping to release an update to the Sidetrack template that does something similar to this.

However that layout configuration looks like it might be a good layout pattern anyway so I may release a new layout for one of the starter themes using that kind of layout as well.

I'll take a look at this today and let you know how I get on.

Thanks

Hi Anthony,

We'd be happy to work with you if you want to use our layout for a starter template. Such a template would be of great help to us!

Is the update to the Sidetrack template coming out sometime soon?

Thanks,
Radhika

Well hopefully. This downtime before we start on the next month's theme is catch up in terms of J3. Sidetrack is in my sites.

Will keep you updated.

Hi there,

Ive attached a new layout here for you to use that adds the bones of the kind of layout you are trying to create.

Basically Ive wrapped all modules underneath the header / logo in a two column layout that includes all of the usual module positions in the left column and a new position called wide1 in the right column.

There is obviously more to it than this in terms of creating your design but it gets the fundamental layout of your screenshot going.

So to use this you need to:

1. Use the blanko template. Probably any of the other themes will work too but this is the one I tested it in.

2. Upload the attached wide-right.php to the tpls folder in the template.
3. Upload the wide.php to tpls/blocks/wide.php

or just use the full zip as attached.

4. Assign a module to the position called wide1.
5. Change the rule for the base width in the less file at less/layout.less ie change:
.zen-container {width:  @basewidth;margin:0 auto}

to
.zen-container {max-width:  @basewidth;margin:0 auto}

5. Then hit the Compile to LESS button int he template admin.

Then you should have a collapsing far right sidebar that corresponds to the light tan column on the right.

You will need to do more to the theme to finish the design obviously but this will get you started.

Thanks Anthony

Hi Anthony,

I have downloaded a copy of the Blankoshop template, as you suggested. But I do not see any attachments in your last message. Could you please try and attach it one more time?
