How display articles?

I can't get any articles to show on my pages. Choosing Featured should put an article on the home page - correct?

And the way to assign an article to a page is to assign it to a menu title after making the menu 'single article' - correct?

I can't get articles to show either way.

This is my first J3.0 site and my first Joomla Bamboo template so I'm feeling a bit stupid today.
