If I have used a quickstart install on a template (specifically JB Grid and Foliolife) do I need to update the install to 1.5.17? How do I do that? Thanks!

There are two (maybe more) updater components that will update your old Joomla install to the most recent version.

extensions.joomla.org/extensions/core-enhancements/installers/7530

extensions.joomla.org/extensions/core-enhancements/installers/11342

As a side note, it is always best to keep your Joomla code up-to-date with the most recent patches, etc. These installers do all work for you and do it very fast!
