Is it possible to update a template?

Say I have v 1.0.1 of Lifestyle2. Is it possible to update it somehow to 1.0.2 when it is released?

Yes

You would back up the site using Akeeba backup to be on the safe side

Then install the new template version via the standard Joomla installer

You don't have to back up but its always best to back up if installing something new and or if anything happens to the server during the update process

If you have edited any core css files those changes will be lost but any changes to the custom.css file will be unaffected
