How to customize from LESS to CSS

Trying to add changes to my templates/revision/css/custom.css file.

But here's the thing, the changes I want to make is to the variables.less file... so can I go from a less to css file? Anything else I need to do/know.

Tried putting in
@primary:  red;

But no luck.

We are working on a tutorial on LESS files - it should be available today or tomorrow
