I am a near-absolute novice in Joomla, having last designed my website using Joomla 1.0xxx, and I am interested in rebuilding my site using the Zen Base template.

Which files am I supposed to download, besides the actual template, and how am I supposed to use the plugins? I am not current in Joomla-ese, so please respond as simply as you can (ie, "File xxx should be uploaded to directory yyy." "Open plugin xxx in folder yyy.").

Do you have the option of installing a quickstart version of the template to explore and play around with before starting on rebuilding your site?

The quickstart contains J3 + the template and all the other content as per the demo site

It is a good option if you have the option of installing a test site so you can break it and noy be a problem
