controlling the size of the left and main column - zengrid framework template

Hey beautiful Joomla folks,

Hope you are doing well. I need your advice on a project I am doing. I am not that far into it yet.

fleron-iversen.com/sites/steinerskoleportalen/index.php/poedagogikken

I have this fixed size design I need to put into a joomla template. I used the responsive template and was intending just to use the left, main, and advert positions, since the left menu needs to be fixed on all pages. I am having trouble controlling the sizing of the left and main area. Left column is set to 3 and Main column is set to 9.

Right now, I have fiddled with making the left column a fixed size 210px in the css, but is that a good idea if I want to keep the responsiveness? Secondly,I can't seem to get the main area to fit. I have also been fiddling with the percentage size of mainwrap row div, and a couple of places you can also add fixed sizing (template manager and in the grid.css). I really don't understand how the percentage and fixed sizes work together. Maybe that is why I am getting a little confused. Should I just go over to fixed sizing, though I need to keep it centered on the page

What would be my best approach? Should I use a different template that has a fixed left menu column? The design has very little spacing between columns and a lot of texture and shadows, so not sure how to control that properly.

This is what I am aiming for:

I so appreciate any suggestions or directions you can put me in. Unfortunately, this project all of a sudden turned into something not so simple.

Kind regards,

Nya

I am very sorry but I will have only very short answer. There is no correct way of having responsive website with fixed widths.

I am sorry :(

But I have to say, looks promising. And I do believe it is possible to make it responsive without fixed dimmensions.

i have this problem with a couple sites due to left column menus. responsive features accommodate with 80-90% success, but there are instances where doing this typographically won't won't render the way we would want. The toggle menu, though not ideal can fix this. And graphic buttons would work, if you don;t anticipate a lot of ongoing menu changes...and you don't mind a little upfront setup work such as creating a sliced PSD file.

It is actually to do what you want but its kind of tricky. It's basically what I did with Platform and its also possible with Sidetrack. Notice on those themes how the left column is the same width.

Might be worth having a crack using Sidetrack to see if it suits your needs. You can have it centered in the middle as well.

Cheers

Hi Anthony,

Thanks for your reply and everybody else's replies.

I have started using the sidetrack template and I am trying to figure out how I make the left sidebar area unfixed. Is there a setting in the template manager? Or do I have to change the css. I found 2 different css - sidebar.fixed and sidebar.dynamic, by default it is set to fixed.

I may have more questions down the road. Feeling a little challenged. :-)

Always appreciate your wonderful support. Thanks.

Right now the left sidebar area stays in the same position on the page, when I move the cursor down. In other words, everything else moves but the left sidebar, I want it to move like everything else. You can see it on this page (it is a long page): fleron-iversen.com/sites/steinerskoleportalen/index.php/poedagogikken/hvad-er-steinerpaedagogik.

Thanks.

Hi Nya,

If you just add .sidebar.dynamic {position:absolute !important} to the css fiel that should cover it.

Let us know if that solves it for you.
