Change font size without editing CSS?

What would the custom.css file look like for increasing the main menu font size? I tried this in the custom.css file:
.menu {
font-size: 18px;
}.

Then I set the page class to menu on the main menu options page. This must not be the correct way to control the menu fonts. Can you please give me a hint? Thank you.
