I'm sure I'm missing something obvious, but I've read the docs, searched the forum, checked all settings I can find and even spun up a test site using the quick-start package and can't find out how to do this:

My main menu has sub items on a couple of the menu items, but they only appear in a dropdown when the parent item has been clicked and is active. Until clicked, there is no way to know that there are any sub items.

Any ideas what I'm missing?

This sounds like you need to enable the drop down option in the module itself
