Questions about how random is applied to group layout?

zentoolsIf you use Zentools please post a review at the Joomla! Extensions Directory.

I think I found something strange with the Group Layout on Zentools 2 with the way that it handles the random setting.

What I wanted was 5 random images, 1 each from 5 separate categories. Each load picks a random item from the category. The order of the categories stays the same.

As far as I can tell, Zentools2 does the opposite. I have it set to random, and it randomizes the ordering of the categories across the page, but the item within the category is staying the same on every load. I'm not getting random new items.

Maybe I'm not understanding how group is supposed to work.

Hi B,

Yes that does sound strange.

What content source are you using?

Thanks

I thought I tried both k2 items and k2 category, neither worked as I expected. I'll try again in an hour.

What should the correct k2 source be?

I just installed Zentools 2 1.11 and have a mixed report

It seems like the random issue has cleared up, but gone are the per category qty fields.

So now it's not possible to get 1 random each from 5 categories.

I'm getting 1-3-1, 1-1-2-1, 1-1-1-1-1
Its a crapshoot.

Hi B,

Which source doesnt give you the quantity inputs?

I see them with K2 items and category selected as a source.

In K2 Categories there is no option for quantity since they are single items that get displayed.

Thanks

Sorry, I didn't see them, the Category pill was selected. BUT, after I clicked it they showed up. Must have needed to be clicked again after the update. They were there before but after update disappeared. Clicking on the pill brought them back.

It appears that you have to click the pill everytime to get those groups to show. If you reopen the module they are gone again.

With regard to my original issue, it looks like i'm getting what I wanted originally. 1 random from each category.

Ah ok - Ive just tested and it appears fine here.

What I am doing is:

1. Set content source to K2 > using the category selection.
2. Set the number of items per category
3. Save
4. Check to to see if the state before saving is still there.

Thanks for confirming re the random.
Cheers

there's still something funky going on here on my end. After I save then I see the content screen but it says 6 items, when I click the content tab then it loads what my real settings are, 20 items.

same thing with the groupings, their not visible, even if set, until after I click the category pill again.
