I write to ask about a particular font (typeface) that appears differently on two different devices, but with the same screen size.

The first image attached shows a part of the front page of test2.chigov.com, appearing on a Mac desktop with the window width narrowed to the smallest possible width. The "Follow Chigov" text appears in the appropriate font.

The second image attached shows a part of the front page of test2.chigov.com, appearing on an iPhone. The "Follow Chigov" text appears in the wrong (serif-based) font.

This happens with both the Firefox and Safari browsers.

The template seems to change the font for the iPhone display, am I interpreting correctly? If so, why does it do this?

You are referring to font-family: 'arial black', 'avant garde';

is that correct?

I'm assuming the iphone doesn't have one or both of those fonts so it reverts to a default font type it has

The browser will descend the font stack till it finds a font it can load / has access to on the device / os
