Changes to Google API Usage

zentoolsIf you use Zentools please post a review at the Joomla! Extensions Directory.

As of the 22 June 2016, Google has changed the requirements to use the Google maps API.

googlegeodevelopers.blogspot.co.uk/2016/06/building-for-scale-updates-to-google.html

All new sites require an API key for the maps to work.

Any sites that were previously using maps will be whitelisted so they should still work, but any new sites will need to use a key for the maps to work.

If you have an issue with your maps, please update to the latest version of jbmaps2 and add an API key in the advanced settings. A link to the api generation page can be found in the advanced tab of the module settings.

Let us know if you have any issues!

My copy doesn't have an API key place in the advanced tab, and I see the version on the site has been updated as of this change by Google Maps. I'll apply the update and see if I can get this thing fixed.

Would be really worthwhile to notify everyone (by blog post or an email) about these changes.

I have upgraded to "JB_mod_jbmaps2_J3+_1.2.3-a.zip" and this version has placeholder names for where the API key goes. No link to where you get the API key from, though.

Hi

I can see you have a ticket open on the same question - if possible can you avoid creating a ticket and a forum post without letting us know

Regarding your question for other users - do you not see in the advanced tab

"API Key

Instructions for creating a new API key can be found here
or follow this link to go directly to the api console.
(Both links open in a new tab)"

The links being

developers.google.com/maps/documentation/javascript/get-api-key

console.developers.google.com/flows/enableapi?apiid=maps_backend,geocoding_backend,directions_backend,distance_matrix_backend,elevation_backend&keyType=CLIENT_SIDE&reusekey=true

Ahh. (facepalm)

I was wondering where my replies to the trouble ticket had disappeared to!!!

My bad.

Please trim / edit / admin away on this thread to clean it all back to where it should be, including this apologetic post.

Yeah, it kinda is. Most importantly, the wed site issue is now fixed.

BTW, the version available for download seems to be an alpha or beta version, but it's working for me and that's the important part.

Grateful for the timely responses here at Joomla Bamboo. That's why I keep on coming back. That, and the quality of the work. :-)

We have owned a Google API key for a few years now. As we are building a new version of our live website on a temporary .net domain, the API does not work. Logically (for me anyway!) would it be best to wait until the new build site becomes the new .com before adding the maps? I see a few complications communicating with Google via the Api Console/verified domain etc.

Just tried adding our .net domain in the Google API Credentials field 'Accept requests from these HTTP referrers' . No luck so far.

Might be easier waiting to the site becomes the new .com?

Or do you have lots of maps needing to be created?

Worth checking that the API is using the correct url referrer especially in terms of www and non-www, alternatively use the catch all *. Google docs explain this but it does trip people up, at least it has me in the past.

Also make sure nothing is being cached on the server side.

Almost ready to transfer our build site to the old .com domain. Will let you know if doing actually doing noting may work as Google has us a pre API modification Google map website. Certianly looking to reduce the map content to the minimum. Cheers, Philpi

With it being the old domain I think it should work without the api

Be interesting to see how you go

Hi Paul, I can confirm that JB Maps2 and Google maps are working perfectly as you predicted with our long standing domain. Here the page www.deliciousitaly.com/north-italy

On small thing. The map controls (eg zoom) can be checked, but not unchecked. Not a problem but just to let you know. At least this was the case for me.
