You need to upgrade the php version on the server I think

So you would need to talk to the host

From the akeeba site

Since February 23rd, 2013 all new versions of our software require PHP 5.3.4 or later. If your server is using PHP 5.3.3 or earlier please note that it is buggy and out of date as it was released on July 22nd, 2010. Any PHP version older than a couple of months can be assumed out of date and vulnerable to security flaws.

The minimum they should offer should be 5.3.10+ - my host is 5.3.28

You won't be able to even run J3.3+ on 5.3.4

The minimum spec for Joomla 3.3 is 5.3.10

You may also want to refer them to

If they can't manage this I would look for another host

Well my hosting company says they are not going to upgrade to a more recent PHP version so it looks like I have to change to a new host. Since I will only be building Joomla sites from now on.. that means I have to switch all of my clients also. Great.
Any recommendations? Thanks

Its hard recommended hosts as hosting seems to fluctuate with time - some good and then become bad

For me personally the best hosts at the moment are siteground (that isn't because we host with them or they offer a discount - for impartiality I should point that out). I've just been using them a lot recently and found no problems at all

I've had really bad experiences with godaddy, fasthosts, one.com and the worse being by far is 1&1

I believe Akeeba recommends siteground as well - if you decide to use siteground there is a discount in the subscription details of your profile
