zentools grid with captions and specific ordering

zentoolsIf you use Zentools please post a review at the Joomla! Extensions Directory.

Hello,
I need to refine my zentools grid. I have images that need to be in a certain order. I had to change the names to have no 10, 11 and 12, but 9a, 9b, 9c... Otherwise the 10 would go after 1. Also, I would like to have captions, but I don't understand how to get those. What is the naming convention title-text-articleID-itemID? I put +s for spaces and they dissappear. I try to rename the file in the K2 media manager and it won't accept the +s.
Please advise.
Thanks,
Alina

Hi Alina,

With the filename divider try switching in the module to underscore.

I'm not a 100% following the caption bit with the " title-text-articleID-itemID" as this was used to load pages prior to using external links

Hi Paul,

I need to create a grid with 35 photos of artworks. Each photo has a caption (date, title, size, medium) and the order of the photos is chronological. I'm trying to find a way of doing it without using table. So I thought zentools is the way to go, but I don't know how to include the captions. I use directory for image source.

With the caption how is it intended to appear?
Below the image? - in the lightbox? - hover?

Cheers

Hi there,

This page should help you with seeing how to name your items.

zentools.joomlabamboo.com/directory-as-a-content-source

So basically the file name should be:

my+title-My-caption.jpg

Then int he item layout for the module use the title, image and text items to have them appear on the page.
Hope that helps.

Hi Anthony,

Another problem is that the site is in French and I have accents in the titles. How do I resolve that?

Thanks,
Alina

I tried to change names of some photos in the Media Manager and I got an error message:
"Unable to rename "untitled10s.jpg". Invalid file name.
Untitled-2006,+acrylic+on+canvas.jpg"".
What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,
Alina

No it's just to separate the neme from the caption. It should read:

Untitled, 2006, acrylic on canvas or for this specific grid:

L'homme entravé,1986, gravure, pointe sèche, 20 x 16 cm or

L'homme entravé (title)
1986, gravure, pointe sèche, 20 x 16 cm (caption)

right

the image file name is everything before the .jpg its just zentools offers the ability for parts of the file name to mean different things.

so the entire file name including all the special characters is

Untitled,-2006,+acrylic+on+canvas.jpg
or
Untitled-2006+acrylic+on+canvas.jpg

At the moment I'm thinking you are using commas, brackets and accents in the filename of the image that are uploaded - is that correct?

The system doesn't let me use +s or accents and accents are important in French. And sometime my descriptions are long. How long can an image file name be?

Ah ok if thats the case then we recommend using the content source as Joomla or K2.

Otherwise to encode accents etc you need to add their html entity to the file name:

You can see a list of items here:
dev.w3.org/html5/html-author/charref

So an item with an accent might look like this:

myfilename´.jpg

So you suggest using content and not directory as image source.
I have 35 images with their respective captions. Does it mean that I have to create 35 categories and 35 articles?

Hmm sorry no that would be a little cumbersome.

Try using the encode method for the accents as mentioned above.

The system doesn't accept the +s neither...

Would it be simpler to create a table with the 35 images and their captions? Good old-fashioned way?

In this case I tend to think it would be easier.

Zentools has certainly been used liek this before but the accent characters adds another layer of complexity.
