I have recently set up a new website and it seems that it takes a long time to load the website. Is there a reason for this? or something I have to change on the joomla back end?

You are currently loading 7mb of images on your homepage so the first thing to do would be to try and resize/compress them as necessary.

You can use www.smushit.com/ysmush.it/ for lossless compression.

Together with the image files (some are 2mb in size) - turn off the developer mode this isn't intended to run on production sites

I have made sure developer mode is off, and also decreased the size of the images on the homepage. Is there anything else I can do to speed up the site?

You still have some pretty big image sizes but it is now 2/3 smaller

Try turning on css optimisation

Then you can try js also (test this to confirm nothing is broken)

In the template settings there is an option to combine and compress css and javascript files.
You can enable those options.
