duplicate email addresses

zentoolsIf you use Zentools please post a review at the Joomla! Extensions Directory.

Hi - One of my clients needs to have duplicate email addresses for his users.
I've been using Community Builder and a third party plugin which until J3.6 worked absolutely fine to allow duplicates.
The developer has apologised and says he is not able to overcome this Joomla update.
Has anyone any ideas what I can do? I've had a good Google, but not come up with anything yet.
Thanks
Ian

Hi Paul - thanks for the quick reply.

By default Joomla does not allow two users to share the same email address.

One of my clients sells finance to dental practices. Some of these have several surgeries all sharing the same email address which, since J3.6, is giving me a problem.

The link below explains the problem and suggests a solution but it is really clumsy.

I'm hoping somebody out there can come up with a better fix.

Thanks again

Ian

Hi Ian,

Are you looking for quotes to fix / create a new plugin version or just general assistance / alternates?

Hi Paul - looking for alternatives really.

However, I see there's there's quite a demand out there for a plugin along these lines - there are a number of organisations out there who need the option of shared email addresses.

It might be a useful gadget for JoomlaBamboo to offer anyway as an addition to zentools perhaps.

On the other hand it would be interesting to have a quote from you - if it wasn't too much I might be able to convince my client to pay for it.

What do you think?

Thanks

Hi Ian,

It wouldn't really fit with zentools but I will ask to see what we can quote

Hi Ian,

It might be this evening before I hear back given the difference in time zones

Hi Paul - that's no problem, I'm used to the time difference.

A friend of mine lives a bit north of Sydney and I host a couple of sites for him for his UK clients, so we're quite often in touch one way or another.

Thanks again

Hi Ian

You could just use alias email addresses for the duplicate users, they don't need to be real email address unless you need to contact the users by email. In a case where you have user 1 with the real email address, then user 2, user3, etc. could have a dummy email.

If you host the domain name then just either create alias emails or use a catch all to dump these messages, or just send to any domain you own with email control that can manage/dump the emails sent to avoid possible false replies or error.

That would be my suggestion as a workaround rather than hacking the core, I cannot see what else a plugin would add function wise.

Hope it helps. Ian

Hmm. Good thinking Ian - I could certainly do something along these lines in the short term.

A couple of thoughts. Although I host the domain I don't manage the email. It's handled by a third party using Microsoft Exchange I think. The mail records are all pointing elsewhere.

If I did control the email it would be simple to create new addresses for them, each one forwarding to the correct address.

And there could be a problem with dummy addresses longer term. Currently the client is not using the site to send out emails, but he might well do in the future.

So a plugin to resolve the issue at source would still be good for me. The one I used before was free - Allow Duplicate Email - and it worked fine.

Many thanks for the input...

Hi Ian

The email address can be to any domain, so don't have to be one hosting the website, it just has to be an email address.

We often setup user accounts without a real email address because we do not use core Joomla to send out emails to users. The dummy email to cover the duplicates could be This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and variations. If you have someotherdomain.com then just create a catchall email to delete the incoming mail, this workaround prevents email bouncing with errors should the site send out emails, but the genuine non-duplicate users email would still get the email.

From a Joomla and user account management perspective duplicating the email is a somewhat flawed logic. Dummy email goes someway to covering it off and still giving separate user accounts to avoid them sharing logins.

Hi Ian - sorry for the slow reply.

What you say makes perfect sense. I just have to convince the client :-)

Many thanks for your help on this,
