Hi Ian,

Joomla ships with a file called htaccess.txt that you need to rename to .htaccess in order to use url rewriting.

Don't generate one using admintools if you are already seeing issues.

Hi Paul and Rob

I had another look at this with a clearer head and discovered why rewrite urls was not working with the original .htacces.

I had the wrong path in admin tools/create .htaccess > Base directory of your site (/ for domain's root)

Once I had corrected this the site worked fine using admin tools' .htaccess

Just thought it might be useful for anyone else who finds themselves beating their head against the wall
