rewrite urls not working

zentoolsIf you use Zentools please post a review at the Joomla! Extensions Directory.

Hi

I can't get rewrite urls to work on www.leadbetters.co.uk
.htaccess is set to ReWrite Engine On and I have other sites on this server which are working fine.
Has anyone any ideas?
Thanks
Ian

Sorry - I get an internal server error on everything but the home page…
Thanks

OK - fixed that, thanks Paul.

I'm still getting internal server errors when rewrite urls is enabled.

Any ideas?

Hi Ian,

I assuming you have edited the htaccess file at some point?

Hi Paul - sorry for the slow reply.

I don't think I've updated .htaccess manually, but I did use create .htaccess in admin tools.

I've attached a copy of the file…

Thanks

Ian

If you use a standard joomla htaccess file and not an admin tools generated one does that work ?

I'm not suggesting deleting the existing one just renaming :)

Hi Ian,

I think you will need to get in touch with your host for this one.

If the site is giving a 500 error with the standard joomla htaccess file then I would assume it's something server related.

If you have any extensions installed that rewrite urls such as sh404sef then first try disabling those.

Regards,

Rob

Hi Rob - thanks for getting back to me.
And for looking at the site - I notice you logged in yesterday.
The standard htaccess.txt I used I copied across from another site, so it's not impossible that it had been edited at some time.
What's the best way to get a clean copy? Download one of your templates and extract it from there?
I have other Joomla sites on this server where rewrite urls is working fine, so I'm not sure about it being a server issue.
Thanks

Hi Ian,

Yes, I had a quick look to see if there was anything obvious but I didn't spot anything.

The best way to get a clean copy is that Joomla ships with a file called htaccess.txt so you can just change the name of that to .htaccess and then check if it works.

Let us know what happens.

Hi Rob and Paul
I have dropped a clean access.txt into the root directory, set rewrite urls to on, and the site is not working properly.
I do have other Joomla sites on this server where rewrite urls is working fine.
Could I have done something fundamentally wrong with the menu setup?
Do either of you have the time to have another look?
The site is not working at the moment - if I take it offline, how can I view the front end?
Thanks

Hi Ian,

Can you confirm that the file is named .htaccess and not access.txt

If the site is offline then you would need to add a frontend login to be able to view the site.

You really need to get in touch with your hosting company if it is not working with the standard Joomla htaccess file.
The issue is not related to the site template.

Hi Rob - I've renamed .htaccess and the site is running on htaccess.txt.

It works fine with .htaccess - except I can't rewrite urls.

thanks

Hi Ian,

You need to rename htaccess.txt to .htaccess

The site won't run without a file named .htaccess

joomla ships with the file named as htaccess.txt so it doesn't overwrite any existing file you might have.

Sorry Rob - I thought you meant I had to run it using the file as htaccess.txt.

I've renamed it, and the site working fine (except for my annoying bit which won't turn red).

What next? Presumably I need to create .htaccess in admin tools, and see what that does?

Thanks again
