add jquery call to header in index.php

I am migrating my site into Joomla (newbie) but have html, jquery experience. I am using fancyZoom in my old home page, but when I open index.php,for the strata template it does not look like the index.php files I saw in the lynda.com tutorials on joomla. There are no head tags to place the jquery call, I looked at all the code and could not figure it out, thanks, Carin

<script type="text/javascript" charset="utf-8">
$(document).ready(function() {
$('.zoom-box-link').fancyZoom({width:400});
});
</script>
