I would like to have a search module in position 'Top1' going across the same size as my article.

When I went into the template I turned off Tops2, 3, and 4 and dragged the Top1 to increase its value to 12 but this doesn't extend the width. is there some other way to do this?

Can you add a link to the site so we can take a look?

The template area can increase the width of the actual position, but it's likely that you would need to add some css to the actual seach module to make it stretch the full width.
