DNS or Domain Name Server

When a site is hosted it is assigned a unique IP address - this identifies its location, however in order to enable a human to find/remember sites each IP address is assigned a unique domain name.

The Domain Name Server/DNS translates the domain name to an IP - in esssence its like a series of phone books with names matched to numbers.
