Banner, is a module position which occupies the full width of the webpage. Usually you would put a module containing a wide image in this position.

A banner can refer to a banner ad at the top of a site as a form of advertising but in Joomla it commonly means the position called banner

Depending on the implementation of a template this may be the full width of the browser window or as a selected width as set by the template
