ZGF4 and J 2.5 > 3.x template migration

zentoolsIf you use Zentools please post a review at the Joomla! Extensions Directory.

Hi,

I had dawdled instead of upgrading my sites to J 3.x. Thankfully, Anthony announced the return of ZGF so the procrastination paid off. :woohoo: But I have not seen any older templates upgraded to ZGF4 yet and I do not see any tutorials on how to remove T3 and replace with ZGF4.

I would love some direction on this, please. :)

Thanks,
Helen

Hi Helen,

We are start of the documentation process and building templates with ZGF V4

What older templates are you looking to update?

Hi Paul,

Most of my sites are Responsive, but I will also need Lifestyle, Koan, and ColorShift. I think that's all....

Hi Helen,

I think Lifestyle may not be replaced as we have Lifestyle 2 in place - the other templates depend on downloads and requests from members :)

We are planning to tidy up the amount of framework versions so the next template after rasa 2 is Focus 2

Once I have more information I will get back to you

Colorshift is ZGF3. Can the ZGF just be replaced with v4?

And, just some instructions to remove the T3 and replace with ZGF4 would be fine with me for most projects. I learn by doing. :)

"Colorshift is ZGF3. Can the ZGF just be replaced with v4"

not at the moment I'm afraid although I think the intention is to replace version ZGFv3 with v4

A couple of folks have asked about ZGF v3 today so will talk to Anthony about this as soon as I can

Hey folks,

Yesterday I released Rasa which has cleared the way (just a little) .. basically the plan ahead is ...

Next Theme:
- Focus

January theme:
- A new design

Then clear all of the zgf3 themes off the list:
eg Corporate, Ascent, Colourshift

But ...

We may also port the simpler themes across to zgf4 such as the building block themes, responsive etc.

Ill have a better sense of this after Focus .. Really appreciate your support on this :)

Thanks Anthony

Also I should mention please feel free to add any others to the list.

I'm also keen to hear what you think we need to be focussing on ...

1. Old templates ported across
2. New designs
3. Zentools2
4. Wordpress compatibility etc

Thanks folks!

Just read through the entries of this forum topic. I am wondering what this is all about!!
Is this all about making older templates usable with Joomla! 3.x.x?
I am certainly interested in that process...

Hi Tony,

We have moved to a new framework called Zen Grid Framework 4

We are in the process of migrating themes to Joomla 3 and the ZGFV4 framework

So we are looking for feedback on what we should focus on :)

Hi Paul:

So, is this instead of the T3 framework??
I have some sites that would benefit from upgrades so that I can move them from 2.5 to 3.5...
Here are the ones I would like to migrate:

JB Corporate
JB Epicure
JB Ascent
JB ColorShift
JB Rasa
JB Intrepid

All of my other sites are J3.5...
Am I on the right track??

Hi Tony,

Rasa2 is essentially a new template on a new framework.

Personally, I would take a backup of the current site and install it locally. Disable any extensions that are not J3 compatible and then run the update and then work from there.

The main issue with updating is usually the compatibility of extensions.

When the site is on J3, install the new template and adjust the layout and module positions to match the old site.

There may be some css adjustments if you want everything to be the same as the old template due to the nature of the new themes being responsive and having different code.

Merry Christmas!

Hi there,

let me chip in here since the topic addresses my thoughts.

Templates:
I would really love to see the JB Corporate be ported to ZGF4 since I have some client's sites running it on J 2.5 and J3 (the Zenbridge version).

Then I wonder about Base3. Is Xero the new Base3 or will there be a Base3 ZGF4 version?
What is about the k2 zenkit styles?

Anthony’s list:
I allow myself to raise one point. Is it possible to have some kind of upgrade porting tool from T3 to ZGF4? We used the T3 decision of JB to move many sites to J3 and T3 immediately. These sites have on average four/five different template styles with different module settings etc. etc. … all configured.
In conclusion, I would love to make use of ZGF4, but I am afraid that most clients would think we are crazy when telling them it is time for another round of work.

What do other members think? I think it might be interesting for JB too, since you could reduce the support of different frameworks to a minimum.

Then the focus could be on zentools2. The ability to link to k2 categories and their pictures would be great as it increases the layout opportunities dramatically!

One last additional point: maybe you could spend some additional time on the one page feature. I love to use it as a kind of in-built landing page. It is handsome, looks great and I have proper root links. But when used with a hidden menu and not on home there are some issues.

What do you think?

Wow, so much text during the holidays … that reminds me to say thank you for the great
support even now!

Have a nice day
