well that filed again, same thing getting to 86.3% and then stopping. when it finally restarts it just errors out. Im still wondering if its down to the same problem others have encountered that nobody seems to have solved yet (re links I posted previously regarding a fix in 3.6 etc) not sure what to do, Ive been through the plugins etc 2-3 times and i havent missed anything I'm sure.
did you find anything interesting in the previously attached error jpg? it makes no sense to me i'm afraid, not sure what im looking for. from the searching ive done it seems its timing out when updating. can I alter this ?
I might try a manual update of 3.6 ..

if i do a manual install of 3.5.1 or 3.6 (which would you use? ) would I be better using the upgrade package or the full version please ?
also is there a way (file etc) that i can access to get some idea of where the install is failing?

The step should be to 3.5.1

I'll ask a developer in the morning if it is possible to connect the existing database to a fresh install of Joomla 2.5 so all extensions / plugins are removed

1. install existing db to localhost
2. install clean new 2.5 site
3. Change configuration.php to point to step 1 db
4. Then update to Joomla 3 fresh 2.5 version
5. Install extensions / plugins etc when Joomla up to date

Cheers

Hi Glenn,

1. Download a completely new 2.5.28 install
2. Complete installation process of 2.5.28

3. Work with the real site to remove everything not compatible and export the database file only.
4. Import the database of site you want to update to localhost phpmyadmin as a new database
5. Change new install of 2.5.28 configuration php to point to imported database
6. Load site and check it works front end and admin
7. Then you could try installing akeeba backup for the 2.5 version so you have a copy of work so far

8. Try and update to joomla 3

Hi Paul, well that went ok, tbh I thought it was going to fail again because it seemed to be stuck on 86.3% again and then it finished with a white screen, (which id read was indicating a failed install) but i refreshed the page and got access to my admin.
I can also view the home page which is a start!
I now have 2 updates, an Akeeba backup one and a joomla upto 3.6.5 shall I go ahead with those?
thanks

Hi glenn,

There is a technical reason why a white screen appears - I must admit when explained to me I did not understand it
(but when updating old J3 you might get a login pop up error or something similiar)

I just remove the bit of the link other than the link to the admin and log out and then back in again

on 3.6.5 have you updated the database and checked discover and update?

You might see the Joomla update component in the update section

Cheers

based on the above i.e. white screen and refresh = working site (after a fashion - I updated Akeeba and got a success/error mesage see attached please)
Ive done the same with one of the old downloaded versions and thats working fine to !
Not sure why, the only thing difference is I set the site to offline (which I'd read somewhere) not sure if that would make a difference. Anyways i need the next step please, is it to install the latest colourshift template ?

Don't worry about that notice for akeeba

After any Joomla update check the database is up to date

Always check before you update Joomla

Right up to Joomla 3.8.2 now. database is good and I've created a current backup.
Is the next step installing the colourshift template or is there anything else I need to do first please?
